About 80% of wicks are made of cotton or a cotton paper blend. For longer burning time, a candle will have a tightly knitted or braided wick, which draws the liquid wax up to the flame slowly. Loosely twisted wicks, such as those in birthday candles, burn more quickly than braided ones. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains (1/2 inch if in a container). And please use a candle snifter if possible. If not, hold your hand behind the flame and then blow gently. That will help stop candle wax from blowing also.
